WE WERE GIANTS

Valentine Gardiennet

(b. 1997, Dijon, Frankrijk)

Born in Dijon and a 2020 graduate of Villa Arson in Nice, Valentine Gardiennet builds large-scale installations steeped in pop culture, childhood and adolescence: a fairground, fairy-tale world populated by reinvented fictional characters.

She combines casting, modelling and ceramics with improvised, make-do techniques such as papier-mâché and chicken wire, oŠen using recoverable materials like newspaper and wood. She plays with scale, enlarging and shrinking, and turns sketchbook drawings into three-dimensional objects that borrow from TV series, comics and fairy tales. Her installations are designed as routes the public sets in motion through a participatory narrative.

Working with colour and childhood, she asks how serious art has to be, and pokes at the condescension adults so oŠen show towards the world of children and teenagers. That idea leads directly into We were Giants.

Her exhibition-residency “It Takes a Village“ ran at Magasins Généraux, Paris from March to May 2025. She has also shown at Cement-Park in Shanghai, art-cade in Marseille, Villa Arson, Les Églises in Chelles and Les Capucins in Embrun. She is a co-founder of and resident at the artist-run Le Wonder studios, and lives and works in Paris.

For We were Giants she has built a group of enormous figures, mostly from salvage, that are brought out each morning to a slightly different spot on the street.

Valentin Guillon

(b. 1993, Le Mans, Frankrijk)

Before he was a painter, Valentin Guillon was an athlete.

Valentin competed in national speed-skating championships before studying at ENSAD in Paris, where he graduated with jury honours in 2016. That training still drives the work. He carries the balance and rhythm of sport into minimal forms and sequences of flat geometric colour, built around rebound, repetition, tension and speed.

His painting always answers to its context, whether on canvas or on a wall. He breaks down an athlete’s gesture, the path of a ball or the markings on a gym floor into pared-back patterns. Much of his work is made to be used. For his 2024 solo show Hors-jeu at the Les Églises art centre in Chelles, he rebuilt a playground as an installation, complete with floor lines, goals and balls.

In the gymnasium of Caen prison, he made an interactive painting, developed with inmates and their sports instructors, that serves as a training surface with three games of skill.

His public commissions include a sport-inspired mural on the boundary wall of the Aqua Vita aquatic centre in Angers. He is represented by Galerie Florence Loewy, his work is in the collection of FRAC Normandie, and he is based in Paris. For We were Giants he paints a circuit across the walls and ground of Nieuwe Emmasingel.

You are inside the work the moment you walk down the street.
